Route description

The name of this geo-trail refers to one of the geological structures which can be observed during this walk and about which you will find more information in the QR codes placed along the way.

If you follow the path you can enjoy a number of interesting locations and a veritably unique landscape.

The trail starts off on a path flanked by conglomerate rocks, situated in the southwest flank of the anticline fold, formed by large limestone and dolomite boulders, and in lesser numbers, smaller quartzite rocks.  This path ascends progressively between holm oaks and pines until it reaches the “stone bench”.  At this point you can already see spectacular vistas of the Montaña Palentina towards the north and west, and the whole of the imposing plains of Ojeda and Tierra de Campos towards the south.

From here the trail crosses the remains of what was a Cantabrian hillfort where, on its north face, you can still make out remnants of the walls and its corresponding ditch.

A few metres from here, and continuing along the signposted path, is the passage towards the northeaster flank of the anticline fold of Villaescusa de Ecla.  From here you can easily observe the morphology of this anticline, partially hollowed out through erosion in its core, and forming an exceptional combe (depression caused by erosion along the axis of an anticline).

The path continues following the edge of the combe of Villaescusa de Ecla along the northern flank of this remarkable anticline.

The route takes us on to the next location of interest, the cascade of La Cervigada, an exceptional vertical waterfall of 20m in height which, although only active during the rainy season, is in itself of great beauty.

From here the path returns to Villaescusa de Ecla along the bottom of the valley where, before reaching the village, we can see two small bridges of Roman origin and a few small gorges carved out of the limestone of the southern flank of the anticline, which gave rise to the legend of “La culada del Diablo” (where the Devil fell on his bottom).  From here Villaescusa de Ecla is less than 400m away.
